The Melbourne Cup isn't just a race, its culture, history
and an event like no other, it even turned into a public
holiday, in Melbourne in 1877. The very first race was
in 1861 when "Archer" won the race, as he did the
year after that. The names of the horses since then have
made history.
It is estimated that over 100,000 people attend the
Flemighton Racecourse and over 650 Million people tune in on
this day to watch the races.
Even those that cannot attend have office parties, staff
lunches, afternoon teast and hat and dress competitions,
with the life of the party, of course, being the television
screen.
Following is a list of the winners to date.
